Ugh. I’ve met many Andrews in my life.

I’m sure your “Andrew” meant well enough, but yeah, he was clueless. Most self-help writers are coming at it from a good place, but there are some who think changing one’s circumstances is easy — as you (or Andrew) said, just go to Cambridge, start a podcast, become a journalist! They don’t realize such achievements are virtually impossible without a network of support.
