Thanks for sharing this story. My mother cared for my grandmother when she was in the throes of dementia, so I know firsthand what you’re dealing with. The worst was when my aunt — my mother’s sister — passed away suddenly and my grandmother had one of those thought loops: “Did something happen to Ann?” Yes, I’d tell her. Ann got hurt. “Did she die?” Yes, she did.
Then she’d start sobbing, eventually pull herself together, and a few moments later ask, “Did something happen to Ann?”
I must have had to break the news about her daughter’s death to her 20 times that day.
Caring for a sick parent(-in-law) has to be one of the most difficult, emotionally draining jobs. Hats off to you for taking care of two of them, and for keeping your cool during the challenging moments.
